FRISCO, Texas — The writing was on the wall for what turned out to be yet another shakeup at running back by the ²ÝÝ®ÊÓƵÏÂÔØÈë¿Ú when they signed former Denver Broncos running back Javonte Williams to a deal in the first wave of free agency, and they've now doubled down by agreeing to terms with Miles Sanders for the 2025 season.
It's a one-year deal that now pairs Sanders with Williams as the two newcomers on a depth chart that is still unsettled, but one that now has more firepower to work with.
The decision to sign Sanders was preceded by Rico Dowdle returning home to join the Carolina Panthers, ending any notions of the latter continuing his career in Dallas.
Sanders, 27, is well-known by the Cowboys' organization, to say the very least, from his time spent with the Philadelphia Eagles. A former second-round pick in Philly in 2019, he spent the entirety of his rookie career with that club and, while there, did his fair share of damage when playing against the Cowboys as a tandem back.
In 2022, he'd earn his first Pro Bowl nod after delivering a career-highs in both yards from scrimmage (1,347) and touchdowns (11), amongst other categories that are evidential to his ability to be a dual threat talent out of the backfield — something head coach and offensive play caller Brian Schottenheimer has made clear is his perfect archetype of a running back.
Both Williams and Sanders fit the mold.
Upon leaving the Eagles in 2023, Sanders went on to sign with the Panthers, whom he parted ways with this offseason in what effectively amounts to a direct swap with Dowdle, and the former Penn State standout will now have two things in common with all-world pass rusher and former Nittany Lion superstar Micah Parsons, now that they both also wear a Cowboys' uniform.
