Updates: Cowboys make official transaction on Zack

Don't miss any of the action with our daily updates: news, notes and more throughout the Cowboys' regular season. Presented by Blockchain.com

March 14

8 a.m. - The era is officially ended in Dallas.

Zack Martin and the Cowboys held an emotional and profound retirement press conference, and ceremony, a few days ago but the future Hall of Famer still remained, technically, on the roster 鈥 until now.

On Thursday, the Cowboys filed the transaction to the league office that designates Martin as a post-June 1 release, a move that was long expected once the perennial All-Pro announced he'd retire.

By designating him a post-June 1 release, the Cowboys will garner $1.25 million in cap savings for 2025.

March 13

9 a.m. - The NFL continues to reward players of teams who go above and beyond throughout a respective season by way of the Performance-Based Pay System.

This offseason, several Cowboys' standouts earned an additional payout for playing time that and performance:

  • Cooper Beebe - $705K
  • Jalen Tolbert - $593K
  • Chauncey Golston - $580K
  • Brock Hoffman - $497K
  • DeMarvion Overshown - $484K
  • Marist Liufau - $449K
  • Jalen Brooks - $443K
  • Rico Dowdle - $423K
  • Jake Ferguson - $417K
  • Israel Mukuamu - $411K
  • Dak Prescott - $10.5K
  • DeMarcus Lawrence - $7.7K

Both Prescott and Lawrence saw their season end prematurely due to an injury bug that ravaged the team and created opportunities for players like Hoffman, Mukuamu and Brooks to step up and earn more from their 2024 performances.

6:28 p.m. - Although it wasn't a major surprise, the Cowboys are getting four more draft picks for 2025, including three fifth-rounders.

The NFL announced their compensatory picks for the upcoming draft and as expected, the Cowboys got the maximum four picks - three in the fifth round and one in the sixth.

That gives the Cowboys a total of 10, headlined by the 12th overall pick in the first round.

The reason the Cowboys were awarded so many picks this year is because of the amount of talent they lost in free agency last year, including players such as Tyron Smith, Tyler Biadasz, Tony Pollard, Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr.

March 10

10:15 P.M. - The first day of the NFL's legal tampering period continued into the night on Monday, as the Cowboys are expected to lose defensive end Chauncey Golston to Dallas' NFC East rival New York Giants according to multiple reports including NFL.com.

Golston was a member of the 2021 Cowboys' draft class that had a heavy investment on the defensive side of the ball with selections like Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa headlining the group.

2024 was the best season of Golston's career statistically, notching career highs in tackles (56), tackles for loss (5), sacks (5.5) and also picked up his first career interception in the Cowboys' 34-26 win over the Washington Commanders.

Golston's breakout season came at the best possible time both for him and the Cowboys, as he filled a need at defensive end with multiple injuries at the position on Dallas' roster and played his best football in a contract year.

3 pm 鈥 Free agency is wildly underway in the NFL as legal tampering ensues, and Chuma Edoga has chosen his destination for the future, expected to join Jourdan Lewis in signing on with the Jacksonville Jaguars at the start of the new league year on March 12.

Initially signed by the Cowboys for depth purposes in 2023, Edoga's role expanded well beyond that over the course of the last two seasons.

He was tasked with showing versatility in playing both guard and tackle, going on to be named starter at the latter position entering 2024 training camp before injury cleared the way for first-round pick Tyler Guyton to take ownership of the position, at least until he then battled injury himself.

And it was then that Edoga and Guyton oscillated as starters on the blindside, with Edoga delivering four starts in five available games last season.

March 3

1 p.m. - The date and time are now officially set for Zack Martin to take the stage and announce his retirement.

The nine-time All-Pro and nine-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman will headline a press conference set for Wednesday, March 5 at 11 a.m. CT, set to be held at The Star in Frisco.

Martin has drawn nothing but praise for his illustrious career in Dallas since getting the nod as the team's first-round pick in 2014, including recently from Dak Prescott, who reflected on what it meant to play alongside Martin.

"Zack's the best," said the All-Pro quarterback from the launch of the Girl's High School Flag Football League. "It's hard to even fathom a locker room or huddle without Zack Martin. He's been here since I've been here and he's been a warrior."

Feb. 27

11:45 a.m. - On three separate occasions in a 20-minute interview, head coach Brian Schottenheimer made sure to reference Tyler Guyton.

And all of the occasions had a positive tone, suggesting the 2024 first-round pick is making the necessary strides to improve this offseason.

When asked about the development of the O-line, Schottenheimer voluntarily brought up Guyton and Cooper Beebe as they enter Year 2 of their respective careers.

"The thing that I'm interested in watching is the development of a couple of the second-year players. You watch Cooper Beebe, Tyler Guyton and those guys," Schottenheimer said. "Tyler Guyton has been in the weight room every day. He's working his ass off. To me, that's really exciting. I think the influence of Klayton (Adams), the influence of Connor RIley, I think that package was so important for us, and I think we hit a home run."

Guyton started just 11 of 15 games played last year. His 18 penalties ranked second in the entire NFL among all players.

11:45 a.m. - Trevon Diggs is hoping for a bounceback season in 2025, currently recovering from a knee injury that led him to season-ending injured reserve in 2024.

The record-setting All-Pro cornerback has since undergone surgery and, per fellow All-Pro defensive superstar Micah Parsons, is on the mend, in good spirits and well on his way to returning to the field for the Cowboys.

"He had a successful surgery," Parsons said. "I talked to him, and he's doing real well. He's in Dallas and he's doing exactly what he's supposed to do. He's the ultimate competitor. He knows when he comes back, and he'll be back real soon, he'll be great.

"It's just all about regaining stability and resting."
