Month to Month: What we learned in January

1_17_MonthtoMonth

FRISCO, Texas 鈥 The 2025 offseason is upon us, with plenty of looming decisions ahead for the 草莓视频下载入口 following a 7-10 finish in the regular season.

This is the last of our five-part series looking back at each month of the 2024 season, and even though there was only one game played, plenty has occurred for the Cowboys in January.

Here's a look at how the month has played out so far:

January:

  • Jan. 5 鈥 Commanders 23, Cowboys 19

Biggest takeaway: The Cowboys would embark on the search for the tenth head coach in franchise history. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement on January 13 that contract negotiations between the Cowboys and Mike McCarthy did not take place, and the two sides agreed to go their separate ways. The search has already commenced, as candidates like Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh are among those that Dallas is reportedly interested in their head coaching vacancy.

Something to remember: Micah Parsons continued his historic first four-year run in the NFL, wasting no time doing so against the Commanders. Parsons sacked Jayden Daniels twice in the first three plays of the game to get to double digit sacks on the season despite missing four games. He would go on to finish the day with 2.5 sacks, bringing his season total to 12 and joining Hall of Famer Reggie White as the only two players in NFL history to record a dozen or more sacks in each of their first four NFL seasons.

Something to forget: Terry McLaurin's game-winning touchdown catch with three seconds remaining in the Cowboys' season finale. Marcus Mariota replaced Jayden Daniels after the first half, and capped off a three-touchdown performance with a perfect pass in the corner of the endzone to McLaurin, handing Dallas their 10th loss of the season.

Employee of the month:

Nick Eatman: While I tried to look at all "employees" for this particular month, I decided to go with the best player in the one game of January. And that was Micah Parsons. Yeah, he could've found a reason not to play the game that didn't mattered. But he not only went out there and played, he balled out from the jump, with two sacks in the first drive. Parsons ended with 2.5 sacks and finished with 12 for the season. I don't really care if his purpose of playing was to pad his stats. Cool, that stat specifically helps teams win games. Figure out a way to get him signed up for the long-term because you don't have enough elite players like that.

Patrik Walker: I could go with Micah Parsons again here (2.5 sacks) or Chauncey Golston (1.5 sacks), but I'm going to give the honor someone who was finally given his first start as a Cowboy: Trey Lance. Was it the a flawless outing for him? Nope. Did it have some great moments, particularly in the first half? Yep. Did it make me angry he didn't get more burn prior? You betcha. So, if that's the last of Lance in Dallas, I'll send him out with an award he only got one chance at earning.

Tommy Yarrish: I'm going to give Mike Zimmer his flowers for this month because of what he was able to do in 2024 to limit Jayden Daniels. In Dallas' two games against him, Zimmer's defense sacked him eight times and forced two interceptions, including limiting him to just 65 total yards in the season finale. Sure, Daniels only played in the first half, but it was clear in that first half that he couldn't get into a rhythm, and the pressure looks that Zimmer was throwing at the rookie played a big part in that.
